he didn’t even say he was sorry

.

On our way home from checking out the house that exploded last night, we saw broken glass all over the street in front of our house. We laughed about it. Here we were, out looking for excitement when we could have stayed home.

A few blocks away, I was waiting to turn left at a light. A car came speeding down the road, straight for our van. At the last minute, he corrected and ended up hitting the side of our vehicle. The headlight was smashed and we have a scratch the lenth of the van. The side view mirror of the other car was broken and I was worried that the driver was hurt. I called the police and Mike got out to check on them. While I was watching out of my mirror, the driver got out and started walking. The passenger scooted over and drove away!

We waited over twenty minutes for the police and they never arrived. I called back and told them to forget it. The boys in the car were young, high school age. Hit and run isn’t a good way to start out your life. There wasn’t a lot of damage and I’m not going to go through the insurance company to fix a light. Insurance rates are high enough without adding an accident.  Plus, I figured paying for the damage to their car would be punishment enough.

.

This is where Mike and I disagree. He started driving around, looking for the car. Sure enough, it was in the parking lot of the high school. The state police were doing a DWI demonstration outside, so he decided to go and talk to them about it. They found the guy and got him out of class. At first he denied everything, but it was obvious the two vehicles had hit each other. When we left, the policeman was writing him a ticket/citation.

Mike was really nice about it. He told the boy that we didn’t want him to be in trouble, but that we were already on the phone with the police when he left. He even shook hands with him, but the boy didn’t seem to care. He was acting tough and disrespectful. Like Echo said after we left: “He didn’t even say he was sorry!”

Y’all are nicer than me. I’ve been hit by TWO high school students in the last year, both in really stupid, completely avoidable incidents, and I did not handle either situation well — I kinda lost my temper both times. The whole “I’m too cool to care about my mistakes” act drives me bananas. Glad your situation was resolved, though.

Also, in election news, more NM tomfoolery:

@michelle/weaker vessel: I hate the attitude thing too. That’s why I could NEVER be a teacher! I would go insane.

Mike was kind to do what he did and I hope the boy learns from Mikes example. I think I see jail in this boys future if this is how he is going to address conflict. You all are great examples to your children.

What Dot said. I remember my first accident, I freaked out and cried and called my dad. (I backed up into someone who was illegally parked and dented their door.) It never even occurred to me to just leave.

Wow much nicer than I would of handled it. I would of chased them down by car, using said car to stop them where ever they ran too…but that is probably due to growing up in Abq where hit and runs are commonplace and usually far more severe than fender benders.
