Don’t forget to vote!
If approved by voters, the bond will pay for construction projects at nearly every school in the district. The mill levy will help pay for improvements to school buildings and school furnishings and will purchase property for future schools.
Superintendent Stan Rounds said there will be no tax rate increase if the bond and mill levy are passed. That’s because the school district continues to pay off bonds approved by voters in the past, keeping its tax rate the same, so that tax rates do not rise as new bonds are issued.
“These projects are vitally important to the current and future operation of the school district,” said LCPS Superintendent Stan Rounds. “Some of our school buildings are more than 60 years old, and upgrades, renovations and expansions are essential if we are to keep all our schools fully functional, adequately furnished and large enough to keep pace with our growing enrollment. We also have to be concerned with providing new schools to keep pace with our growing enrollment,” he said. LCPS had a total enrollment of nearly 24,800 at the 40-day count in mid-October 2009, nearly 1,000 more students than the 2008 40-day count. [More]
This bond will provide much needed repairs to the schools. Alameda Elementary received money for new bathrooms in the last bond and they are so much better for the kids than the old ones. The money spent really does make a difference every single day. Today’s bond addresses a large number of issues [click here for a complete list of projects] but I’d like to tell you about one in particular: new parking at Alameda.
The traffic problems around the school aren’t just annoying, they are dangerous. The parking lot only has enough room for the teachers so any time parents come to the school they have to park on the street. More often than not, they park along our driveway and block access. The city has come out several times and painted the curb yellow but every day for a half hour our house is completely inaccessible. It is hard to blame the parents because there isn’t anywhere else for them to go. When school lets out, the street becomes choked with traffic: cars parked on sidewalks and only one lane moving. I’ve personally witnessed four accidents just this year. Every single one of our (4) vehicles has been hit while parked at least once. It is ridiculous!
The school has a large area between buildings adjacent to the current parking lot that is rarely used. The plan is to pave it and create additional parking for teachers. That will free up space in the parking lot for parents. It won’t solve the whole issue, but it will help.

It passed!
